I am thinking about getting Kefir for my daughter who is experiencing intestinal/colon problems – I think probiotics will really help her. Does anyone know any good recipes for smoothies? Thanks!!!
Look up “kefir” if you aren’t sure what I’m talking about. It’s like yogurt, only better!
Thanks for these ideas so far!
My daughter is 14, she experienced symptoms like appendicitis over the last 13 days and has been referred to a pediatric GI specialist. There is a family history of colitis – so we are hoping it is not that. She has been on anti-biotics since she was six for recurrent Urinary Tract Infections and I am thinking it could be she just doesn’t have enough good bacteria in her GI tract now. Makes sense. She is an athlete, eats an extremely healthy diet (lots of raw fruit, veggies, fiber and whole grains, organics). I never would have expected any of our kids to have GI problems. She hasn’t been stressed – she is a super happy, well-balanced kid. She is my smiley one! I am sure she’ll be fine – but I am going to be proactive about helping her w/ diet! We are what we eat!

Smoothies are a GREAT way to boost immunity. Fruit smoothies are high in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that your body needs every day. Because vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, we should aim to top up our levels of this important vitamin each day.

As for smoothies, soy yogurt blended with some fruit (such as blueberries & raspberries) is a nutritional powerhouse meal in a glass! Easy to digest and full of vitamins and minerals.
I am sorry to hear about your daughter. Here are a few handy tips for good colon health:
-The colon requires plenty of water to function properly. You probably hear this all the time, but drinking water throughout the day should help. I love natural mineral water.
-Gentle exercise. I don’t believe that heavy exercise or strenuous activity is good for the body. I love gentle exercise, maybe try some walking every day. Gentle exercise should help because it boosts circulation.
-Ease stress. Encourage your daughter to release any stress she may have- there are many ways to do this. Maybe meditation would be worth a try? Stress can cause a multitude of health problems, especially congestion in the body.
I hope you find the link below useful:

[edit] You’re correct, antibiotics can be detrimental to colon health, as they ”wipe out” even the good bacteria. It takes a long time to replenish bacterial colonies in the gut. But I’m happy to hear she has a healthy diet. I hope time heals all.
Wishing you & your daughter health and happiness
