A My Health HQ reader wrote this to me last night:
I have been told that the size of my fibroids isn’t overly large but I am having symptoms of heavy bleeding. Am I ever lucky that I have a job that I can go to the bathroom and change every 1/2 hour, sigh. I am wondering how large do they have to be to cause trouble? I am starting to feel like a wimp! LOL
I said:
I don’t think you’re a wimp. I would go get checked for anemia if I were you, though. It sounds to me like you’re losing a lot of blood.
If I’m not mistaken, I think symptoms depend a lot on the location of the fibroids. I have a friend who has a fibroid that is larger than mine, but is not in her endometrial lining and she doesn’t have major symptoms. Mine, however, is all up in my lining, is the size of an orange now and has been doing things to my body since it was the size of a pencil eraser. At first it was just infrequent spotting between periods.
It took 11 years for it to get to the size it is now and just started giving me serious problems this year. I had blood transfusions in January, June and July. I used to exercise regularly, but now all I want to do is be still. My periods are heavy. There have been times I’ve had to change my protection every 30 minutes to an hour. I passed out once and scared my daughter half to death.
I’ve had enough and am scheduled for an ab myo on Oct. 6. I never thought I’d be so excited about surgery.
