i worked out a curves for a year before it closed because of a ridiculously high rent. it seems silly at first but you see results. the circuit workout honestly works every muscle. you will also see yourself building up endurance..you will start out by marching in place at some mats and then about a month later you will honestly be doing a more high impact cardio, such as running in place.

they also measure you monthly, which lets you see your results. the curves girls will learn your name fast and will motivate you.

i did not do the diet program but several women did and lost weight. in the year i lost about 20 pounds, but i really didn’t start going 5 times a week until the last 3 months.

    good luck.

Oh, yes curves is a wonderful gym, but I have to stress that it is nothing like Bally’s. I have worked out at both. I totally loved Bally’s when I was younger between the ages of 18-24, and it was totally a fun place to be. The weight rooms were fantastic and state of the art, the aerobics class schedules were fun and gave you an excellent cardio workout, and being that I was single and in great shape of course I had to show it off in cute workout gear and what not. There is alot of competition at Bally’s.

But as for Curves, it is a women’s gym…NO MEN ALLOWED. When I got older and after I got married I much more preferred their sort of workout. It was a softer setting, more personable, and there is no competition among the women there. I got to know many of the other members, some much older than me, a few younger ones, and all different body types from athletic to obese. But it didn’t matter because we weren’t there to compare. We were there to workout.

The machines are set in a circle type of setting so you are facing all the other members as they work out as well. Makes for be able to converse as you work out.

It is a circuit type workout so it works out your entire body, every muscle group, plus in between each machine is a session of cardio….running in place, walking in place, jumping in place…so it is fat burning as well.

The shortest workout is once around the circle which is 30 minutes long, so it is a great workout for those who have a busy lifestyle and don’t have much time to workout, but you can go around the circle as many times as you wish.

They have an eating program as well if you so choose to couple it with the workouts

It is more personable because it is a small gym, so the girls at curves get to know you pretty well. They do a body composition test once a month, and motivate you for progress.

The only downfall, which I must say, I didn’t mind too much, is that most of the curves gyms do not offer aerobics classes, which I have always absolutely loved taking. I did miss them when I started working out at Curves, but the aerobics classes were obviously replaced by the cardio segments in the circuit.

You can do both Curves AND Weight Watchers if you want. One is nutrition; one is exercise. You need both. But if you already eat healthy, there’s no sense doing Weight Watchers.

Some advantages of Curves over traditional gyms:

    - It’s all women; you don’t have to worry about guys checking you out

    - It’s not competitive at all

    - It’s a set program. When I went to a traditional gym, I did get a session with a trainer when I joined to show me some of the equipment, but I had to do it all on my own (unless I paid more) – no one helped me figure out which machines I should use for a good workout. Since you use all the machines at Curves, you are guaranteed to get a full workout.

    - The machines are hydraulic, so the faster you work them, the harder it is. This means you can’t lift too much weight (or too little if you keep working the machines), and as you get stronger, you don’t have to adjust the machines since they self-adjust.

    - It’s 30 minutes (or more if you decide to stretch longer or visit with people before or after your workout). When I’m feeling lazy, I can tell myself that it’s only 30 minutes and get my butt there vs. a regular gym where I worked out longer but didn’t go as often because it was such a production.

    - Occasionally they do fun games or contests to keep things interesting

    Some disadvantages to Curves:

    - It is more expensive than some of the other gyms

    - Often it’s older women, not a lot of younger folk. This is OK with me (I’m 34), but for a teen, I don’t know if this would be a problem or not.

    Good luck!
