i am not a doc but so have acid reflux. i take prescribed medication called omeprazole and also i sleep with the top of my bed elevated. works for me. good luck.
Ask her doctor about the medication Famotidine.
I have a tendency to get ulcers, and that makes them disappear like they were nothing. I also have acid reflux, and Famotidine actually helps my stomach a lot. I know how much it sucks to have that. I wish her the best and hope this helps
Avoiding various foods & drink can help alleviate the distress one experiences from acid reflux, a common discomfort many people experience. Acid reflux can also be calmed with OTC[over-the-counter] drugs available without prescription. Simply speak to your local pharmacist. I currently take Prilosec but did have to take Aciphex for years which is very expensive & available by prescription only. You can also visit http://www.webmd.com a very user friendly site & read all about acid reflux as well as find direction toward resolve if acid reflux becomes an unbearable discomfort for your Mom. Take care~
I am sorry to say but your doc is completely useless !!!
Has he not heard of ZANTAC from Glaxo?—-one Ranitidine Hcl 150mg tab at bed time and works in 90 minutes to stop the acid secretions in the stomach.
Also raise the head of the bed by 2-3 inches by placing wooden planks.
Eat at least 2 hours before bed time, no spicy foods.
Drink a glass of cold milk at bed time, does wonders for my acidity!!
I also suffer from acid reflux and have found a cheap yet effective way to calm my system with the reflux. Have her get yogurt that has active bacteria in it like crowleys or activa and the bacteria will actually eat the acid and calm her stomack. It works almost immediately and is much cheaper than the medications out there for acid reflux. Also have her to not drink excessive amounts of water because by doing that she is expanding her stomack and thus creating more space for the acid to roam around. Also when she is experiencing the reflux have her not to drink milk or take any tums. For most people they would help coat the stomach but with acid reflux is actually just sits there and sours creating not only more reflux but a sour stomach in the end. Stay away from spicy foods and excessive amounts of choclate. And try to not eat or drink anytime past 8pm. By then your digestive system slows down for the evening so there is more chance of having servere reflux after that time. If she drinks soda have her either lessen the amount she drinks or have her stop all together. I haven’t had a soda since two years ago and my reflux has been a lot less because the carbonation is what causes the acid to go crazy. Exercising also helps because it will tighten up the flap that covers the stomach so that the acid will be more contained to the stomach where it belongs.I know this sounds like a lot of rules but it will help decrease her reflux and feel better. Good luck to her and I hope this has helped her out. God Bless.
