Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) appeared on NBCs Meet The Press with House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (VA-7) on February 28, 2010 to discuss health care reform and how Congress and President Obama want to give Americans and small business owners more control over their own health care by reducing costs, giving them more choices and commonsense rules that keep insurance companies honest. Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz and the President believe that the American people and small business owners should have the same insurance choices and consumer rights that members of Congress an federal employees have. The Congresswoman also addressed reconciliation, and how this rule, requiring a simple majority, was used to pass the 2001 Bush tax cuts for the wealthy that was nearly twice the size of this bill. This is about tax cuts for middle class families and small business owners. A rule requiring a simple majority has been used on health care numerous times and Republicans have supported those measures. If Republicans say that they agree with 80% of the existing health care bill, then why do they want to start over? Why don’t we just sit down and work through the remaining 20%?
